01. Process

The Historical Reporting dashboard for News Insights is a comprehensive visual tool, designed to provide large amounts of metadata from News Stories to News Agency users. The data provided on the dashboard is dual: the amount of story matches from news publishers, as well as how much engagement these stories have accumulated in social media platforms news publishers use (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram).

The initiative to provide a comprehensive historical insight dashboard for News Insights was birthed after extensive discussions with clients in the ideation phase. It was clear that the data the News Agency customers needed to make actionable decisions (e.g. start sales discussions with publishers that used news agency stories without written permission) had to be presented through a business intelligence interface, allowing them to determine which stories work best for them, which do not and how many resources they need to assign for a news event.

The process of designing such a dashboard included initial UX research for user needs (building up the different use cases, determining the target audiences, creating the personas and user journeys) and a considerable amount of iterations in designs, both in the phase of wireframing and the final designs.

02. Wireframing, prototyping and validation

The wireframing was done on pen and paper, and then moved to Adobe XD CC. It was tested with a certain amount of users (power users mostly) and iterated. The wireframes were then translated into design screens with microanimation interactions. The design screen links were sent to customers for further testing. Video calls were conducted to gather feedback and a second round of iterations took place. The final design screens were sent to developers. After the roll-out, a validation process took place, including screen video recording software, behavioral data tools and traditional phone calls.
